Reef Cleanup

Sunday afternoon cleanup was a success with Friends of Our Florida Reefs (FOFR) and DX Divers on the Lady Go dive boat.

Who is Friends of Our Florida Reefs?

Friends of Our Florida Reefs (FOFR) is a registered 501c3 nonprofit citizen support organization dedicated to conserving and protecting over 100 miles of vital coral reefs (directly offshore SE Florida between Miami-Dade and Martin Counties) by enhancing and complementing the critical efforts, programs, and activities of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Coral Reef Conservation Program.

Jon, Brandi & Patricia had a blast diving and cleaning up the “Ant Beds” reef last Sunday, August 21, 2022.

They collected:

  • Fishing line
  • fishing hooks
  • banding
  • plastic bag
  • cans
  • fishing weights
  • plastic princess handbag
  • plastic wrappers
  • Fishing wire

They dove on top and along the reef edge.  Finding debris wasn’t a problem as there’s fishing line almost everywhere you look.

The goal of the cleanup is to raise awareness in the population about marine pollution and contribute with it the reduction of garbage and plastic in the ocean. Also, use your ZooKeeper.  It’s so much easier to unscrew the top and just dump out the continents. Using a bag the hooks and other sharp debris get stuck when trying to empty. The drag from the bag while diving is no fun either.
