Patricia Answers – What was your first experience with a Lionfish?
I was snorkeling and lobster hunting in Islamorada with Brian of Satisfaction Charters. I went for a lobster and Brain saw the Lionfish from the boat because it was shallow. He said don’t go near them; they can hurt you. Brian thought it was odd because usually you don’t see Lionfish in the shallows of the gulf. He went to the boat and got a spear and speared them. Afterward, I asked why he did that, and that’s when I learned about them being venomous, tasty to eat and bad for the reef ecosystem.
I have thanked Brian several times as Lionfish hunting is my favorite underwater activity to do. I’m sure I would’ve learned about Lionifsh over time but I’m happy I learned early on in my diving so I can help make a difference sooner than later.
