[Sunrise, FL] – The waves may have been challenging, but the enthusiasm from the ZooKeeper 2024 Lionfish Winter Throw Down still slayed! As we conclude this first annual tournament, we are excited to share the remarkable results: 90 brave adventurers registered to be part of this important event — our reef heroes!
With 51 divers hitting the depths and embracing the underwater challenge, they collectively slayed an astonishing 5935 lionfish! Talk about a reef renaissance – these divers weren’t just having fun, they were effectively protecting our precious marine ecosystem one lionfish at a time. The bigger picture is priceless – the slayers preventing millions of eggs from being hatched, thousands and thousands of reef fishes and creatures from being gulped down into the bottomless bellies of the Lionfish.
A gigantic round of applause goes out to our fearless competitors, but especially to our winners who slayed their way to glory! Your dedication and prowess in hunting have made the reefs a safer place for native species — and we’re not just lion-taming, we’re reef-saving!
