We pride ourselves in knowing that the Tampa Bay Spearfishing Challenge is one of the most fair and exciting tournaments for novice and expert shooters alike with a focus on fun\, camaraderie\, and our passion for the sport. As such\, our tournament has honors for the top overall shooters\, largest fish per species category\, top freediver\, top female\, and top junior. \nUnique to the Tampa Bay Spearfishing Challenge\, we conduct a random drawing format for prizes which gives every competitor an equal chance at our first-class prize table regardless of tournament placement. VIGFC has car parking available\, and the location can also be accessed easily by the safari taxi route\, or if your are coming from STJ by ferry. Please contact Matthew at 340-208-0738 if you have any questions.\n\nIs the Captain’s Meeting mandatory? \n\nYes\, the designated team captain is required to attend. For other members of the team\, the meeting is optional\, but recommended to ensure all the paperwork is in order. We will collect all of the data and ensure it is accounted to your team for prize awards.\n\nWhere is the weigh station? \n\nBehind Tap and Still Red Hook\, just outside of the American Yacht Harbor gate.\n\nCan I pull into American Yacht Harbor to drop off my catch? \n\nYes\, the event will have two slips in American Yacht Harbor for your convenience. Please take your coolers off of the boat and walk them up the dock\, and then free up the slip for another team to use. Please do not wait in the slip until your catch is measured\, weighed\, and counted.\n\nWhen do the weigh stations close? \n\nWeigh stations will close at 2pm. Please have your catch in before the cutoff.\n\nWhat if I want to free dive? \n\nFree diving is allowed within the rules of the 2025 STT/STJ Lionfish Derby. You will still be required to fill out a waiver and pay the $50 dollar non refundable registration fee.\n\nHow do I know if I am in a protected area? \n\nPlease use this map to determine where VI NPS Waters begin and end.\n\nCan we have a Boat Captain / Surface Support that stays topside the entire derby and does not hunt? \n\nYes\, they will be considered a spectator of the event and will still need to register and sign a waiver. Please include their information during team registration. They do not need to pay for the entry fee\, but also will not be entitled to an event sun shirt.\n\nCan we have other spectators on the boat? \n\nYes\, you may have additional spectators on the boat who are not participating in the hunt. They will required to complete the waiver.\n\nWill there be a raffle? \n\nYes. The raffle will take place at the awards ceremony on Saturday. There will be a raffle to give away one blue Zookeeper with one extra red funnel and one extra blue funnel. No entry is necessary\, as all registered and paid participants in the derby will be eligible for the raffle prize. The names of all of the registered lionfish hunters will be written onto a slip of paper\, placed into a hat\, and drawn to reveal the winner.\nYou must be present to win.\nAdditional prizes may be added to the raffle on an ongoing basis.\n\nCan I win first\, second and third prize in a single category? \n\nNo. Per the tournament rules\, each team is eligible to enter one fish in the Smallest category\, one fish into the Largest category\, and their total catch number will be used to determine their place for the Most category. The two fish submitted to Largest and Smallest will be counted in the Most entry.\n\nDoes that mean I can win in multiple categories? \n\nYes! Members are encouraged to arrive on April 29th to meet with Tom Ingram to discuss current issues that are important to the scuba diving industry. \nDive in Day provides a platform to engage Florida’s 160 legislators\, the Governor and their staff members\, and hundreds of visitors to the Capitol.  DEMA has reserved the courtyard and first floor of the Capitol building to give DEMA Members and Florida-based diving businesses an opportunity to showcase Florida’s recreational diving operators. It’s a chance to highlight the importance of scuba diving to Florida’s economy\, tourism\, and marine ecosystems while advocating for policies that sustain our industry. \nOpportunities to Participate \n\nTable-top Display at the Capitol Rotunda: We encourage members to set up interactive displays that showcase their dive shops\, marine life education\, or scuba diving experiences. All teams must be registered before the Captain’s meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday\, April 24\, 2025.   \n\n\n Event Schedule:  \n\n\n\n\nThursday\, April 24 : Captain’s Meeting & Kick-Off Party. This will be hosted in-person at the Florida Keys Brewing Company. Teams may join in-person or virtually. (At least one member from each team must be present at the Captain’s Meeting).  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, April 25 and Saturday\, April 26: Fishing open sunrise to sundown  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, April 27: NO FISHING  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTeam weigh-in/team fish drop-off: 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:00 PM: Awards Ceremony   \n\n\n\n\nBe sure to join us at the Lionfish Derby & Arts Festival from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM on the REEF Campus Sunday\, April 27. Call to book: 305-664-2211  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuiescence Diving Services: 6-pack boats available for lionfish charters. MUST BOOK ENTIRE BOAT. In-water guides come with additional fees. Call to reserve a boat: 305-451-2440.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall shops for rates and to reserve space.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTeams that will be fishing in the areas that fall under the FKNMS and FWC permit must schedule a time to come to REEF campus to pick up packet material\, permits and flags from April 21-23. Derby teams can be made of 2-4 divers. Decide on what level you will participate (Apex Predators or Reef Defender). \nStep 2: Register your team and pay the Registration Fee. \nRegister and Pay \nStep 3: All members of your team need to complete the waiver. \nOnline Waivers \nStep 4: Make sure everyone on your team understands the rules of the Derby. \nDerby Rules \n \n\nDERBY DETAILS \n\nFISH DROP OFF – REEF Campus – Sunday 8:30AM-11:30AM. No late fish accepted\nThe Captain’s Meeting is mandatory for the team captains\, and all team members are encouraged to attend.\n\nThe team captain must be one of the four participants in the derby\, but does not need to be the captain of the boat. Safe collecting and handling techniques and derby rules will be reviewed. The Captain’s meeting will be offered in-person and virtually.\n\n\nTeams wishing to fish in the areas that fall under the FKNMS\, FWC\, and DEP permit must schedule a time to come to the REEF Campus to pick up packet materials\, permits\, and flags during the week of August 12 or pick up at the Captain’s Meeting.\nAll lionfish should be well packed on ice and teams must provide enough ice for lionfish\, particularly those that will be held overnight.\nTeams will be able to take at least 80% of their catch after it is measured (REEF will keep some lionfish to use towards education and outreach activities).\n\nAwards \n\nPrizes will be awarded for MOST lionfish\, SMALLEST and LARGEST lionfish and a Golden Fish raffle award for all participating teams.\nDuring registration\, teams must choose to compete in one of two divisions for the MOST Lionfish Prize.\n\nApex Predators Division (More Competitive Division; Greater Prize Money)\nReef Defenders Division (More Casual Division; Lower Prize Money)\n\n\nAll teams will compete together for LARGEST and SMALLEST lionfish categories.\nAll teams will be entered to win the $500 Golden Fish award as long as they check in with there data sheets even if they don’t catch fish\nAll participants will be entered to win individual raffle prizes that will be drawn at Captains Meeting on Thursday and Awards on Sunday.\nAwards will be presented in person and virtually (in-person attendance at awards is not mandatory)\n\nPrizes will not be mailed out. Teams must arrange to pick them up if they are not at the award\n\n\n\n
