We are excited to announce this year’s Dive in Day at the Capitol will take place on April 30th\, 2025. Members are encouraged to arrive on April 29th to meet with Tom Ingram to discuss current issues that are important to the scuba diving industry. \nDive in Day provides a platform to engage Florida’s 160 legislators\, the Governor and their staff members\, and hundreds of visitors to the Capitol.  DEMA has reserved the courtyard and first floor of the Capitol building to give DEMA Members and Florida-based diving businesses an opportunity to showcase Florida’s recreational diving operators. It’s a chance to highlight the importance of scuba diving to Florida’s economy\, tourism\, and marine ecosystems while advocating for policies that sustain our industry. \nOpportunities to Participate \n\nTable-top Display at the Capitol Rotunda: We encourage members to set up interactive displays that showcase their dive shops\, marine life education\, or scuba diving experiences. If you are interested in exhibiting\, we suggest you bring simple table-top displays\, brochures\, videos\, product information\, handouts or other engaging materials to spark interest and conversation with lawmakers and the public.\nExhibiting companies should plan to set up starting at 4:00 PM on April 29th so that your exhibit will be up and running on the morning of April 30th.* Spaces are available on a first come-first served basis\, and are large enough to accommodate an 8ft. table. For DEMA members this is a free opportunity to reach divers\, legislators\, and visitors to the capitol! Decide on what level you will participate (Apex Predators or Reef Defender). \nStep 2: Register your team and pay the Registration Fee. \nRegister and Pay \nStep 3: All members of your team need to complete the waiver. \nOnline Waivers \nStep 4: Make sure everyone on your team understands the rules of the Derby. \nDerby Rules \n \n\nDERBY DETAILS \n\nFISH DROP OFF – REEF Campus – Sunday 8:30AM-11:30AM. No late fish accepted\nThe Captain’s Meeting is mandatory for the team captains\, and all team members are encouraged to attend.\n\nThe team captain must be one of the four participants in the derby\, but does not need to be the captain of the boat. Safe collecting and handling techniques and derby rules will be reviewed. The Captain’s meeting will be offered in-person and virtually.\n\n\nTeams wishing to fish in the areas that fall under the FKNMS\, FWC\, and DEP permit must schedule a time to come to the REEF Campus to pick up packet materials\, permits\, and flags during the week of August 12 or pick up at the Captain’s Meeting.\nAll lionfish should be well packed on ice and teams must provide enough ice for lionfish\, particularly those that will be held overnight.\nTeams will be able to take at least 80% of their catch after it is measured (REEF will keep some lionfish to use towards education and outreach activities).\n\nAwards \n\nPrizes will be awarded for MOST lionfish\, SMALLEST and LARGEST lionfish and a Golden Fish raffle award for all participating teams.\nDuring registration\, teams must choose to compete in one of two divisions for the MOST Lionfish Prize.\n\nApex Predators Division (More Competitive Division; Greater Prize Money)\nReef Defenders Division (More Casual Division; Lower Prize Money)\n\n\nAll teams will compete together for LARGEST and SMALLEST lionfish categories.\nAll teams will be entered to win the $500 Golden Fish award as long as they check in with there data sheets even if they don’t catch fish\nAll participants will be entered to win individual raffle prizes that will be drawn at Captains Meeting on Thursday and Awards on Sunday.\nAwards will be presented in person and virtually (in-person attendance at awards is not mandatory)\n\nPrizes will not be mailed out. Tickets to the JuLionfish Festival include entrance to the Aquarium\, small bites and lionfish tastings\, beer and wine bar\, live entertainment\, a silent auction and more! \nWhere can I buy tickets to the JuLionfish Festival?\nTickets can be purchased here. \nI am a diver. Can I still participate in the JuLionfish Derby?\nYes! Derby registration is still open and you can register for the Derby here; divers can register for the Derby + Festival\, or just the Derby. Registration includes an official event T-shirt\, a participant’s meeting\, commemorative challenge coin and eligibility for prizes. \nWhat time do doors open and when does the event end?\nDoors open at 7 p.m. No entry will be allowed after 9:15 p.m. No re-entry to the event is allowed. Tasting stations and bars will close at 9:45 p.m.\, and the event concludes at 10 p.m. \nWill I be able to buy tickets at the gate?\nWith a limited number of tickets available\, we anticipate selling out prior to the event. We encourage all who wish to attend to buy tickets prior to the event. If there are tickets available on the date of the event\, you will be able to buy them at the gate. Please note\, to avoid ticket scams\, only purchase tickets directly from the official website at scaquarium.org/JuLionfish \nWhat should I wear?\nMost attendees of the JuLionfish Festival come dressed in summer casual attire. \nWhat should I bring?\nPlease have your photo I.D. ready. DESCRIPTION:Register for the Looe Key Lionfish Collecting & Handling Workshop!\nFriday\, April 28 – Looe Key Reef Resort\, 27340 Overseas Hwy.\, Ramrod Key\, FL 33042 \nRegister here!Workshop Waiver \nREEF Lionfish Collecting & Handling Workshops include a classroom portion that covers invasion history\, lionfish biology\, ecological impacts\, current research\, and collecting and handling techniques. Once wrapping up on land\, we will head out to the water and put our skills to work during a two-tank dive charter. The workshop and dives are free\, and REEF will provide lionfish collecting gear\, but you will need to bring your own SCUBA gear or organize a rental through the dive shop. Please contact the shop directly prior to the workshop if you need rental gear. *Due to the advanced nature of the lionfish collection dives an advanced dive certification and 30 dives minimum are required for dive participants. \nDates & Times\nFriday\, April 28 \n\nClassroom background: 9:15 am (check-in at 9 am)\nTwo-tank removal dives: 12:30 pm check-in\n\nMeeting Location\nThe classroom background will be held at the Marathon Public Library – 3490 Overseas Hwy\, Marathon\, FL. \nThe two-tank removal dives will be held at Looe Key Reef Resort – 27340 Overseas Hwy\, Ramrod Key\, FL. \nAdditional Details\nREEF will provide lionfish collecting and handling gear to all registered participants. You will need to provide your own scuba diving equipment. If you need to rent equipment\, you will need to set that up with Looe Key Reef Resort before getting on the afternoon boat. \nYou must place your $35 deposit to secure your dive spot on the removal charter. This deposit can be refunded if requested via email within 7 days upon completion of the workshop. \nIf you have to cancel your registration you must do so within 48 hours of the workshop dives to refund your $35 deposit. We cannot provide refunds within 48 hours of the workshop or for no-shows. \nDue to the advanced nature of the lionfish collection dives an advanced dive certification and 30 dives minimum are required for dive participants.
