This two-day conservation-focused tournament brings together the dive community to combat one of the greatest threats to Florida’s reefs — invasive lionfish. \n  \nEvent Dates & Times\n  \nApex Predator Open (Two Day Derby): \nTournament Start: Saturday\, May 29\, 2026 – 7:00AM \nTournament End: Sunday\, May 30\, 2026 – 4:00 PM \nAwards: Sunday\, May 30\, 2026 – 5:00 PM \n  \nThe Mini (Single Dive Derby): \nTournament Start: Saturday\, May 29\, 2026 – 8:00AM \nTournament End: Saturday\, May 29\, 2026 – 1:30 PM \nAwards: Saturday\, May 30\, 2026 – 1:00 PM \n  \nTournament Format\n  \nApex Predator Open (2 Day Derby) \nThe Main Apex Predator Lionfish Derby runs both Saturday and Sunday and is open to: \n•         Personal boats \n•         Divers using their own selected dive outfitters \nDivers will compete in teams of two to remove as many lionfish as possible. Each participant will receive a commemorative Apex Predator challenge coin as well as a large mesh dive bag. Participants may hunt anytime between daylight Saturday morning and 4:00 PM Sunday\, submitting fish for official measure and count on Sunday. Hunters may hunt anywhere in Florida but all fish must be presented during the official count and measure ceremony on Sunday May 30th for the fish to count. \n  \nMini Derby – South Florida Diving Headquarters \nIn addition to the main derby\, a Mini Derby will be hosted at South Florida Diving Headquarters. Participants will board a chartered dive boat and head out to designated dive sites to hunt. Divers will compete in teams of two to remove as many lionfish as possible during a two tank dive. This event revamps the First Annual Lionfish Tournament\, which struggled with limited\nsponsorship\, participant\, and vendor engagement. To increase appeal\, the Warrior Memorial Reefs Foundation and Point South Marina have\nexpanded the tournament to include Snapper and Grouper\, alongside the invasive Lionfish\, promising a more vibrant and competitive\nexperience. \nTo be more alluring to all anglers\, hook and line/ reel fishing has also been added. This allows teams to consist of both spearfisher and reel\nanglers\, if they choose. \nThe Reels & Spears Gulf Classic will feature a Calcutta and Trifecta competition\, adding excitement for anglers. On Saturday\, September\n13th\, the event will transform into a family-friendly celebration\, complete with sponsor booths\, vendors\, and activities for all ages\, fostering\na festive community atmosphere\, while capturing the spirit of the Emerald Coast and Panama City Beach. \nAll proceeds\, after prize distributions\, will directly fund the Warrior Memorial Reefs Foundation’s mission to construct memorial reefs\nhonoring fallen warriors at no cost to their families. The tournament is a NOT-FOR-PROFIT event with proceeds going to support marine and local charities\, causes\, and organizations. \nOur tournament\, formerly the TBSC Winter Invitational\, started as a modest competition for local spear-fishermen and has grown to one of the world’s largest and most prestigious annual spearfishing tournaments. We pride ourselves in knowing that the Tampa Bay Spearfishing Challenge is one of the most fair and exciting tournaments for novice and expert shooters alike with a focus on fun\, camaraderie\, and our passion for the sport. As such\, our tournament has honors for the top overall shooters\, largest fish per species category\, top freediver\, top female\, and top junior. \nUnique to the Tampa Bay Spearfishing Challenge\, we conduct a random drawing format for prizes which gives every competitor an equal chance at our first-class prize table regardless of tournament placement. This random prize format puts the focus on community in conjunction with competition\, with honors regularly taken by inshore or newer divers due to rules that create a level playing field. We will collect all of the data and ensure it is accounted to your team for prize awards.\n\nWhere is the weigh station? \n\nBehind Tap and Still Red Hook\, just outside of the American Yacht Harbor gate.\n\nCan I pull into American Yacht Harbor to drop off my catch? \n\nYes\, the event will have two slips in American Yacht Harbor for your convenience. Please take your coolers off of the boat and walk them up the dock\, and then free up the slip for another team to use. Please do not wait in the slip until your catch is measured\, weighed\, and counted.\n\nWhen do the weigh stations close? \n\nWeigh stations will close at 2pm. Please have your catch in before the cutoff.\n\nWhat if I want to free dive? \n\nFree diving is allowed within the rules of the 2025 STT/STJ Lionfish Derby. You will still be required to fill out a waiver and pay the $50 dollar non refundable registration fee.\n\nHow do I know if I am in a protected area? \n\nPlease use this map to determine where VI NPS Waters begin and end.\n\nCan we have a Boat Captain / Surface Support that stays topside the entire derby and does not hunt? \n\nYes\, they will be considered a spectator of the event and will still need to register and sign a waiver. Please include their information during team registration. They do not need to pay for the entry fee\, but also will not be entitled to an event sun shirt.\n\nCan we have other spectators on the boat? \n\nYes\, you may have additional spectators on the boat who are not participating in the hunt. They will required to complete the waiver.\n\nWill there be a raffle? \n\nYes. The raffle will take place at the awards ceremony on Saturday. There will be a raffle to give away one blue Zookeeper with one extra red funnel and one extra blue funnel. No entry is necessary\, as all registered and paid participants in the derby will be eligible for the raffle prize. The names of all of the registered lionfish hunters will be written onto a slip of paper\, placed into a hat\, and drawn to reveal the winner.\nYou must be present to win.\nAdditional prizes may be added to the raffle on an ongoing basis.\n\nCan I win first\, second and third prize in a single category? \n\nNo. Per the tournament rules\, each team is eligible to enter one fish in the Smallest category\, one fish into the Largest category\, and their total catch number will be used to determine their place for the Most category. The two fish submitted to Largest and Smallest will be counted in the Most entry.\n\nDoes that mean I can win in multiple categories? \n\nYes!
